Garnalex Awarded QUALICOAT Approval for State-of-the-Art In-House Paint Plant

Garnalex’s in-house state-of-the-art powder coating plant has been recognised for its’ quality assurance processes after being awarded a QUALICOAT coating applicator approved licence – the world’s leading quality label for aluminium coatings.

This is especially significant as Garnalex is currently the only manufacturer in the East Midlands to hold the coveted licence. As well as helping them stand out from the competition, the licence gives customers peace of mind as they know the company’s products are of the highest standard.

To gain the licence, Garnalex underwent QUALICOAT’s rigorous approval process, which involved a detailed application outlining every step of the company’s powder coating process and submitting samples for testing.

Being an approved licence holder means Garnalex has and will continue to adhere to QUALICOAT’s specifications for its’ plant, equipment, coating materials, and finished products. QUALICOAT has a continuous monitoring programme in place.

For licence holders, this ensures they keep their approval, while their customers continue to benefit from the highest standards possible. This is in line with QUALICOAT’s mission to maintain the standards and quality of coatings for alloys and architectural applications.

Since investing £1.3 million to bring powder coating in-house, Garnalex has gained control over its’ quality assurance processes while Sheerline’s customers have benefited from improved quality delivered in as responsive and agile way as possible.

Ross Hartshorn, Technical Production Director, said: “Since bringing our powder coating in-house, our paint plant has gone from strength to strength, gaining multiple industry recognised accreditations, including the QUALICOAT coating applicator approved licence.”

“This is all part of our strategy to ensure we maintain our edge and keep both Garnalex and Sheerline ahead of the competition. The team have worked hard to ensure we gain this approval – it’s a fantastic result, particularly as we are the only manufacturer in the East Midlands to hold this quality licence,” he added.

SheerVent: A Flush Intelligent Roof Vent for Sheerline’s S1 Lantern

Sheerline has announced the launch of SheerVent, a revolutionary roof vent for the S1 lantern. It offers an innovative approach to ventilation that doesn’t compromise on the stylish and modern aesthetic associated with the award winning aluminium glazed roof.

Designed to enhance Sheerline’s award-winning S1 roof lantern, SheerVent can not only be specified on new projects but can even be retrofitted to existing installations. With a sleek minimalist design, the intelligent roof window sits flush with S1’s rafter bars unlike alternatives that sit on top of the bars. Creating an almost invisible roof vent when closed – for a truly beautiful finished product.

Customers have the option to upgrade to powered actuators to create an automated intelligent ventilation system. This can be further enhanced by discreet sensors, which can be installed away from the lantern to monitor for rain, wind, and light, giving customers peace of mind if the weather suddenly changes.

Unlike traditional vents, SheerVent does not require the use of muntin bars and offers reliability without the risk of leaks and water ingress. The product is fully thermally broken and uses the same high-performance 28mm glazing as the S1, ensuring spaces are cosy in winter and cool in summer.

This enables customers to create bright, airy living spaces with a consistent aesthetic throughout the home – a trend that has grown in popularity over the past few years and continues to be an attractive option for both renovation and new build projects.

Another popular feature SheerVent offers – as with all Sheerline products – is colour choice. Customers can choose from a standard colour range as well as opting for custom or dual colours depending on their needs.

SheerVent is currently being manufactured in-house by Sheerline to ensure the company’s stringent quality processes are met before it is rolled out to fabricator customers across the country. There is already a waiting list in place for customers who wish to supply the product.

Also revealed at FIT Show 2023 was Sheerline’s new 3 Way option, which adds even more styles to the S1 roof lantern. It includes the same aesthetic style and appeal of the 2 and 4 way designs but gives customers an option for wider roofs that don’t rely on jack rafters.

S1 includes in-built security features as standard, is stylish with clean, crisp lines and deep internal rafter and ridge bars to create the popular architectural aesthetic, all while offering exceptional thermal performance.

Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, said: “SheerVent was hugely popular when we unveiled it at FIT Show 2023. It’s the next phase in the evolution of one of our most popular products – the S1 roof lantern. Customers often ask us about ventilation options that don’t compromise on the overall quality and look of the roof lantern.”

“With SheerVent, we’ve achieved this thanks to our continual investment in both our equipment and products. We’re committed to overcoming the issues traditionally associated with aluminium products to ensure Sheerline keeps its’ competitive edge, and our customers remain happy,” he added.

Sheerline’s Prestige Range Transforms Council Building as Part of Thermal Upgrade Scheme

The installation of Sheerline’s Prestige windows and doors has helped Swale Borough Council improve its’ thermal efficiency as part of its’ cost and energy saving Thermal Upgrade Scheme. The project has been completed in conjunction with Swan Doors & Windows and Waller Associates.

One of the key objectives of the project was to improve the overall thermal efficiency and therefore lower the carbon footprint of the building. Targets such as this are gaining importance as businesses and organisations look to reduce their energy costs and the UK government works towards its’ Net Zero Strategy.

Taking place at Swale House, the council’s head office, the works were completed in stages to minimise disruption to employees and due to the large scope of the project. The key aim was to replace the existing windows, which were original to the offices (built in 1984) and performed poorly as they were only single glazed.

The Sheerline system was recommended for the project because the company met the three specific requirements: a robust aluminium system, excellent thermal properties, and short lead times. Swan Doors & Windows fabricated and delivered all the windows for this project.

To upgrade the appearance of the building, the council opted for Sheerline’s Prestige windows in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016). This contemporary colour choice is one of the most popular because of its versatility and ability to enhance the look of most properties or buildings.

Paul Ewart, Director, Swan Doors & Windows, commented: “The Sheerline Prestige range of windows is a robust aluminium system with great thermal efficiency, which ultimately helps the planet and will save on energy costs for years to come.”

“What we especially like about Sheerline’s products is the method of mechanically joining the profiles, the low U-values and the use of standard hardware,” he added.

Waller Associates successfully won several project elements through a competitive tender process, including the installation of the windows. The company installed anti-solar glass on every south-facing window to prevent glare and reflect sunlight, which is useful for those who work at a computer. This approach will also prevent the office from overheating during hot summer months.

A representative from Waller Associates commented: “The council is extremely pleased with the new windows, and they look great. In addition, they have dramatically improved thermal efficiency, which means the heating will not be used as much – the benefit of this is lower energy costs in the future.”

This is the second time Sheerline, Swan Doors and Windows, and Wallers Associates have collaborated to transform a building in the South East. The companies previously worked together to transform a large grammar school in Kent.

Sheerline’s CEO, Roger Hartshorn, comments: “The fact Sheerline was recommended and then selected for this project shows we’ve got the formula right. From the very beginning, we understood the need for a stylish, secure, yet thermally efficient aluminium system. But we also value our installer and fabricator partners and wanted to make life easier for them. The positive feedback from this project proves we’ve achieved this.”

“It’s always a pleasure working with Swan Doors – as one of our trusted partners, we can depend on them to complete every job to a high standard. We look forward to working with them on many more successful projects in the future,” he added.

ATT Fabrications Chooses Sheerline for Transformational Architecturally Led Project

County Durham-based ATT Fabrications have collaborated with THF Homes to enhance an architecturally led new build design using Sheerline’s range of advanced, thermally efficient aluminium windows and doors.

This impressive new build project features three sets of Prestige Bi-Fold Doors, two Prestige Composite Door Frames and 15 Classic Beadless Windows – which were specified in a flush frame with stepped sashes. These products were selected because they fit the client’s brief of being attractive, thermally efficient, and featured the super slim sightlines Sheerline is known for.

Another feature that helped Sheerline’s Classic Beadless Window stand out from the competition is the patented jointing method. This unique method of construction simplifies the fabrication process, eliminating the need for crimping and specialist machinery. While also reducing the misalignment of frames and locking in quality.

As well as helping the client achieve a sleek, modern, airy aesthetic, this combination of products was selected to ensure there was a consistent look across the property. Sheerline prides itself on offering a perfectly matched range of aluminium windows, doors, bi-folds, and roof lanterns.

Perfectly matched doesn’t just refer to the brand’s styling, it also extends to colours (with custom and dual options available), high performance U-values and energy ratings, security, and guarantees. When a manufacturer reaches this level of consistency, it gives homeowners extra peace of mind. All products on this project were chosen with Cream exteriors and Hipca Gloss White interiors.

ATT Fabrications has been trading as a large, high-volume fabricator for many years. Based in the North East of England, the company supplies large DIY chains, trade, as well as directly to the public from its’ factory in County Durham.

The company manufactured all the windows and doors supplied and were particularly impressed with Sheerline’s product range, short lead times, and the fact the team were extremely responsive to their enquiries, offering a high level of support at all stages of the project.

Providing an agile and responsive service is a key part of Sheerline’s ethos and strategic approach to customer service. The brand provides online and on-site support to fabricators and installers, as well as advice to homeowners to ensure all its’ customers get the most out of their products and benefit from the unique features of the Sheerline range.

Andrew Devlin, Managing Director of ATT Fabrications, commented: “We’re delighted to have supported THF Homes as part of a project to design and build a stylish home on an exclusive development in the picturesque village of Lanchester, County Durham. The property needed the wow factor as all the homes in this development are valued at £1 million plus.”

“This task was made easier thanks to Sheerline and its’ Classic System because it suits the traditional style of the build while adding a contemporary feel. Both THF and the installers appreciated the fact the windows came pre-glazed using the beadless system,” he added.

Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, commented: “That ATT Fabrications chose Sheerline for this project is fantastic – the finished result is a refined, modern looking home that encapsulates everything we offer as a brand. That our aluminium windows, doors, and bi-folds were selected highlights the versatility of our products.”

“Our proven ‘whole-house’ solutions enhance new build and renovation projects aiming to achieve an ultra-modern, super sleek aesthetic, but we’ve also got products that provide a subtle upgrade for traditional, character, and heritage properties, so homeowners can retain their property’s charm without compromising on thermal efficiency or security.”

We invite attendees of the FIT Show to stand Q31 to see for themselves what we offer and discover what sets us apart from the competition. You won’t be disappointed,” he added.

The sales and technical team are looking forward to sharing the latest product developments and demonstrating the range on stand Q31.

Sheerline Launches Thermally Efficient Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door

Sheerline has enhanced its popular Prestige range by adding a new thermally efficient Lift & Slide Patio Door, ready to transform any space. Its’ super slim sightlines of 106mm (frame and sash) maximise the views in any room and it offers high-performance U-values of 1.4 with double glazing and 1.0 for triple glazing.

These U-values are easy to remember as they are the same for every product within the Prestige range and have been achieved thanks to Sheerline’s proprietary Thermlock® technology. It’s a huge achievement for the team and further highlights Sheerline’s commitment to innovative, energy efficient products that don’t compromise on sustainability, security, or style.

A key feature of the new Lift & Slide Patio Door is the fact it perfectly matches Sheerline’s other products so homeowners can achieve a consistent aesthetic throughout a project. However, fabricators and installers also benefit from the consistency provided by Sheerline’s technical team.

For instance, the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door integrates seamlessly with other products as it utilises Sheerline’s proven clip-in bead system. In addition, it’s available in Sheerline’s signature stepped sash, a range contemporary colours, is Part L compliant (as standard) and can be ordered up to a maximum size of 6.5m wide and 2.5m high, with up to 400kg sashes.

The Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door completes the Prestige door range, meaning that Sheerline fabricators can now offer a matching suited range of proven products that integrate seamlessly.

Installers will also appreciate the different threshold styles available. This includes the standard outer frame, a version with a clip-on cill nose, alongside a ramped low threshold, which has been tested in-line with Part M requirements. There’s also a concealed zero threshold available, which is ideal for sheltered locations on projects looking for a seamless transition between spaces.

As with all Sheerline products, the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door has been designed to offer high levels of security as standard, featuring a unique retracting hook-lock with flush keeps. Which reduces the risk of snagging clothing on protruding pegs.

The doors glide smoothly during operation because of the specially designed stainless-steel tracks and high-performance running gear. Dual and triple track options are available, which cover most requirements. To enhance the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door, a patented sealing system has been incorporated to ensure the doors are weathertight against the worst of the UK’s weather.

Considerable design consideration was also given to ensuring interlocks were as slim as possible, while also maintaining the systems exceptional thermal credentials. The new Sheerline patio comes with a choice of standard interlocks with slim 80mm sightlines, as well as ultra-slim 52mm interlocks suitable for use on many popular styles.

Sheerline’s Product Design Director, Adrian Redshaw comments: “We’re really proud of our new Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door because it completes our Prestige range without compromising on the features that are most important to our customers; super slim sightlines, exceptional thermal efficiency, and looks that match all our other products.”

“These are the features that elevate this product, and the Prestige range, to the next level, especially when compared to other products on the market. We’re helping homeowners achieve their dream aesthetic that integrates stylish interiors with beautiful outdoor spaces without compromises,” he added.

Sheerline adds Clip-In Bead Option to its Popular Ultra-slim Classic Range

Sheerline’s latest addition to the popular Classic range is the newly launched clip-in bead option. This fabricator and installer-friendly addition gives Sheerline customers greater choice as part of its game-changing aluminium window and door offering. Joining the existing high-security beadless Classic window.

Customers choosing the new clip-in bead version can still expect the same secure, ultra slim, high-performance aluminium frames they are familiar with. But now with the added flexibility of being able to supply frames and glass separately.

Using a simple clip-in bead based on the proven Prestige bead design, Classic eliminates the need for time-consuming wedge gasketing. There’s also no requirement to mill the beads during manufacture, keeping this latest development as fabricator friendly as possible.

Available in the same two sash styles as the rest of Sheerline’s innovative thermally efficient range, Stepped and Contemporary, windows are available in two outer frame sizes, both available in flush fitting, or standard options to meet homeowners’ specific requirements.

Easily meeting the requirements of Part L with an A WER for 28mm double glazing, Thermlock® multi-chambered technology allows you to meet the newly introduced Part L building regulations without having to upgrade to expensive triple glazing or use foam inserts. However, those looking for the ultimate thermal performance will be delighted to know that U-values of 1.1 are achievable with standard triple glazed units if required. A clear advantage over systems based on older, polyamide thermal breaks.

This is a huge competitive advantage for Sheerline users, as many legacy systems are unable to meet the newest standards easily.

With ultra-slim sightlines as low as 36mm for fixed frames and 59mm for openers, as well as a full range of dedicated authentic clip-on Georgian bars, Classic is the ideal aluminium window system for discerning customers looking for the best heritage style window possible.

Other key selling points of the Classic range include the fact that every product is available with Secured by Design accreditation, valued by homeowners looking for extra peace of mind. Testimony to the fact the every Sheerline product is designed to be as secure as possible.

Sheerline CEO, Roger Hartshorn said: “Our new clip-in bead system is a game-changer for fabricators and installers who are tired of working with traditional aluminium frames that simply don’t offer the modern benefits that our systems offer.”

“One of our key aims for the Sheerline brand has been to overcome the weaknesses associated with traditional aluminium systems. We’re a solutions-focused business and the fabricators and installers we work with drive what we focus on. That’s why we’re striving to make aluminium as good as it can be.” he added.

New Thermal Calculator Exclusive to Sheerline Customers

Sheerline has launched a new Thermal Calculator exclusively for its customers so they can calculate Energy Ratings and U-values quickly and efficiently. It has been developed by the in-house R&D team to help customers meet Part-L regulations in line with the government’s 2025 Future Homes and Buildings Standard.

The proprietary software behind the solution produces Certass endorsed results for U-values and Energy Ratings aligned to the Certass Thermal Rating Register. This gives customers peace of mind as the accreditation is legally recognised, reflecting the fact Sheerline has developed a simple yet effective system that demonstrates the energy efficiency of various profile and glass combinations across the entire Sheerline range.

This clever software enables fabricators to self-generate specific thermal ratings for all windows and doors within Sheerline’s Classic and Prestige ranges in as little as 30 seconds. It is easy-to-use, guiding users through the specific information that is required.

This includes the product range, sash feature, whether the product is a window, door or bi-fold along with the frame type. Once fabricators have input these details, they can check their Part-L compliance within seconds while creating labels for the products they are fabricating.

It is a legal requirement that installers supply and fit windows that are not only fit for purpose but are also Part L compliant. There may be instances where installers are required to provide evidence to prove the products they supply are compliant – this powerful tool puts that information at fabricators fingertips.

Under the new legislation, which is designed to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions, there is a mandatory 30% cut in carbon for all new homes. In addition, other buildings, such as office buildings and shops, will have to reduce their carbon footprint by 27%.

While this is no easy feat, Sheerline’s products have been designed with these changes in mind, meaning future legislation and sustainability were key considerations during the research & development phase.

As a result, all Sheerline’s products offer easy Part L compliance, so the installers and fabricators they work with don’t have to worry about expensive upgrades to triple glazing or adding additional foam fillets to increase thermal efficiency.

The new rules apply to all window and door upgrades, whether for new builds, extensions, or renovations. For instance, all window and door replacements after June 15, 2022, must have a maximum U-value of 1.4 (energy rating B for glazed windows and doors or C for single doors). While new builds are subject to a limiting (maximum) U-value of 1.6 for windows and doors.

Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, said: “As an installer and fabricator-friendly organisation, we pride ourselves on making life easier for our customers. The changes to Part L regulations are not insignificant, and it’s important we meet the new requirements head-on. That’s why we’ve developed our new Thermal Calculator to take the hassle out of generating thermal ratings and U-values.”

“It’s an invaluable tool for our customers, not only to help the country reduce its carbon footprint, but to help homeowners enjoy thermally efficient, warm homes. When customers choose Sheerline, they’re choosing compliance and all the benefits associated with it,” he added.

Sheerline Showcases New Products and State-of-the-Art Facilities during Customer Open Days

Sheerline recently held several open days for its’ installer and fabricator customers at its’ HQ in Nether Heage, Derbyshire. It provided an opportunity for senior members of the team to highlight Sheerline’s achievements over the past few years and showcase its’ new products that will be available from early 2023.

This includes a new Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door, which completes the Prestige door range. The technical design team have worked hard to ensure there is consistency across the Prestige range for fabricators and installers, therefore the U-values match every item within the Prestige range, achieving 1.0 triple glazing and 1.4 with double glazing. The new door also uses the same proven clip-in beads as the rest of the range – further evidence of Sheerline’s commitment to integrated system design.

It integrates seamlessly with other Sheerline products, so homeowners don’t have to worry about mismatched doors and windows. It is Part L compliant as standard, and as with all Sheerline products, providing exceptional thermal efficiency through Sheerline’s proprietary Thermlock® technology.

In addition, it maximises the views outside by offering slim sightlines and is available in stepped and contemporary styles. With a choice of four threshold options, the option for triple tracked options that allow for easy drainage, the system also features fully retracting hook locks and flush jambs to avoid the use of protruding pegs that can snag on clothing.

The team also took customers through the benefits of the new beaded option for the ultra-slim, ultra-secure Classic range as well as showing how fabricator and fitter friendly the new SBD option for the award winning S1 lantern is.

Darren Pusey, Supply Chain & Technical Director, Lister Windows commented: “Lots of things have impressed us about Garnalex–they’re dynamic, exciting, supportive, and they’ve got a fresh approach to the aluminium industry, but with years of experience to back them up.”

“They’ve got high-performance U-values for every product within the Prestige range, which is a huge achievement and an excellent selling point for us. And because of Sheerline’s approach, they’ve brought to market a family of suited products that genuinely work well together, look good, and use interchangeable parts,” he added.

After showcasing its’ new products, the team provided a comprehensive tour of Sheerline’s state-of-the-art facilities to give customers an insight into the manufacturing process. This included the company’s SMS HybrEx Press, which can extrude 4 tonnes of aluminium per hour. Garnalex prides itself on being one of very few manufacturers in the UK to extrude their aluminium in-house. With the most integrated production facility in the UK.

There was also an opportunity to see the in-house powder coating plant in operation, which has benefited from over £1.2 million in investment and was recently awarded full Syntha Pulvin applicator status. Aside from enhancing Sheerline’s quality control process, powder coating in-house means customers benefit from agile lead times.

Sheerline CEO, Roger Hartshorn said: “We’re delighted with the success of our customer open days and look forward to holding more in the future. It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase what we’re doing at Sheerline, which is pushing the bounds of what is possible within the fenestration industry by using technology to innovate and set ourselves apart from our competitors.”

Garnalex CEO Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Fenestration Awards 2022

Roger Hartshorn has been recognised for the significant contribution he has made to the fenestration industry during his 45-year career, (and still counting!) after receiving the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Fenestration Awards 2022, which took place at the Hilton Hotel at Doncaster Racecourse.

This award not only highlights Roger’s hard work and commitment to excellence, alongside the positive impact he has had on the industry, but also shows how highly he is regarded as the NFAs are peer-voted. Being recognised for his outstanding contribution by other industry professionals is an enormous compliment. Especially when considering this year’s NFAs were the biggest yet, with over 2,000 nominations submitted across all categories and a total of 29,060 votes being cast ahead of the winners being announced – a record for the organisation.

Roger, who despite his success tends to shy away from the limelight, was nevertheless delighted by the news, said of his award win: “I’ve thankfully achieved a lot during my career, but receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s NFAs was a nice surprise. To be recognised by my peers and industry professionals is not something that happens every day, and that means something.”

“Over the past few years, Garnalex and our aluminium window and door brand, Sheerline, have gone from strength to strength. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved already as the UK’s newest systems company and are continuing to achieve – this is just the beginning,” he added.

Roger is no stranger to the fenestration industry, having started out at HL Plastics in the late 1970s, where he was part of a management buyout. Under Roger’s direction the company created and launched Eurocell, which started as a window cill brand, and was grown into one of the UK’s most largest PVC-U systems houses with its own branch network, setting the company apart from the competition, resulting in it being bought by the Tessenderlo Group.

It was a few years later when Roger left Eurocell to form Flamstead Holdings, which bought back HL Plastics. Liniar was formed and achieved critical acclaim after its first window system was launched in 2008. Ten years later, Roger stepped down as the CEO of Flamstead Holdings (after 41 years with HL Plastics) and formed Garnalex, home of the Sheerline brand.

Throughout his career, Roger’s strong leadership and entrepreneurial spirit have enabled him to achieve sustainable business growth in every company he has operated. He is driven by a desire to improve current systems and accepted processes, making them more efficient, providing better products as well as service levels to fabricators, installers, and homeowners.

After achieving great success with PVC-U systems he is now replicating this success within the aluminium window and door market through the revolutionary Sheerline brand. Bringing many of the higher service and performance expectations to a sector that was stuck in the past, helping overcome many of the existing issues within the aluminium industry.

For example, Sheerline overcomes aluminium’s traditional issues of thermal efficiency through its innovative Thermlock® technology, which was developed in-house and reduces heat loss, while also helping keep service levels across all colour combinations agile. In addition, every product within the Sheerline Prestige, Classic and S1 Lantern ranges are available with Secured by Design accreditation – a police-backed initiative, helping highlight Sheerline’s high quality, robust design.
